Will Punk Media be transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6?
The internet is a beautiful thing, allowing billions of us to communicate, express our freedoms, likes, dislikes and present our businesses, products and ideas to everyone around the world. Well lets start with what makes it all work.
So what is IPv4?
IPv4 is the fourth generation of IP address protocols. This is the way most of us have come to know IP addresses over the development and expansion of the internet. These types of IP Addresses are formatted such as: 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS), or on your home or business connections like 192.168.1.157 or 10.10.1.23. These series of numbers uniquely identify a machine or device on the internet. But there is a flaw in this method. Experts estimate that by the summer of 2015 the United States and Canada will run out of these IP Addresses. Which is why something had to be done.
What is IPv6?
IPv6 is the 6th generation of IP address protocols. With this new method comes a new format. IPv6 addresses are formatted as such: FE80:0000:0000:0000:0202:B3FF:FE1E:8329. This type of format allows for 340,282,366,920,938,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 IP addresses to be used worldwide. That’s 340 Undecillion IP Addresses!!! With this new method it is unlikely that we will ever run out of IP addresses in our, or any lifetime.
So lets get down to business…
The short answer is Yes, but it’s not an easy task to just enable IPv6 for the amount of equipment Punk Media uses to bring your services to you. As a result, we will begin testing IPv6 on our internal and corporate networks around June 1st, 2015. Once these networks have been established, we will then begin testing IPv6 on our server to server communication networks. And finally, once testing has been completed on both of those phases, we will begin to roll out testing for our hosting servers. We do not know when that will be, however regardless, you should not see any issues with your services, since IPv4 will still continue to work after Internet Service Providers begin issuing IPv6 addresses.
